Steven Universe Future – Series Review

After the groundbreaking finale of Steven Universe season 5, a lot of people thought that was it – that was the end of the show. Then Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse surprised us with a Steven Universe movie. And now we’ve been given the final installation of Steven’s story – Steven Universe Future.

Steven Universe Future explores something that most other shows only give a glimpse of in their final episodes – life after the conflict. Or, more specifically, how the conflict has changed the characters. Life goes on – and people have to try and forget the terrible things that have happened to them.

Things seem fairly normal in the first few episodes. The Crystal Gems have finished building Little Homeworld and are now focusing on helping the other gems who have decided to stay on Earth learn more about human culture. Connie is getting ready for college. Lars is working in a shop again and Sadie has a new partner.

But just as things finally start to slow down, Steven begins to notice a change in his powers. He sometimes starts to glow pink and can slow down time. At first this is played off as Steven having cool new powers. But as the season progresses, it becomes clear that this has actually emerged because Steven is trying to cope with the traumatic memories of his childhood. His new powers only emerge when he’s angry or upset, and become more and more destructive as the episodes go on.

While Change Your Mind seemed to give a great fix-it ending for the story of Steven Universe as a whole, something that it really glossed over was how violent Steven’s childhood was. This is mainly thanks to the Diamonds; however, as Steven realises in Growing Pains, he’s been in many other situations where he has almost died, or other gems have been poofed in front of him. Because he saw repeated incidents like this during his childhood, he now feels like any sort of conflict he faces as an adult will result in him or the people he loves being harmed in some way.

Steven hasn’t been given the opportunity to grow up in a healthy environment thanks to the actions of the Diamonds. It could be argued that Pink Diamond was being selfish by creating a rebellion and then having Steven as soon as she managed to escape the conflict. Because Steven has the “Rose Quartz” gem, all of the blame for the war and Pink Diamond’s “death” was placed on him from a very young age. This clearly has a serious effect on his mental health, as he feels like he always has to fix his mother’s mistakes and make everything better. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a child. He also struggles to talk to other people who weren’t involved in the gem-related conflict during the events of Steven Universe. In Bismuth Casual, Steven meets some of Connie’s school friends and finds it difficult to talk them. This is because he didn’t have a normal childhood, and therefore can’t relate to other people who did.

MV5BNGE4NGZjMDEtZGU2Mi00MjkxLThlMmEtNjg4ZTI2YWM2MDgxXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyOTY1MDU1Njg@._V1_

He blames the Diamonds for his outbursts because they’re the ones who caused all of his problems when he was younger. He begins to have violent thoughts, and tries to act upon them in several episodes. In Homeworld Bound, Steven tries to shatter White Diamond; although the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred in this scene, it is made clear that he didn’t actually shatter her, but he did really want to do it. In Fragments, Steven actually does shatter Jasper because he became too violent when they were fighting each other.

steven-universe-future-jasper-fight-1024x523

His reaction when he finally tells Connie, Greg and The Crystal Gems about this addresses one of the major problems that people had with the show. Steven takes the attitude of “I fixed it, so it’s ok” to try and avoid how serious these issues are. Viewers of the show had originally argued that the problems in Steven Universe were fixed too easily because all Steven had to do to end any conflict was talk things out with other gems/people. Rebecca Sugar is clearly addressing these concerns, because this attitude is what eventually leads Steven to his breakdown in I Am My Monster.

Steven-Universe-Future-Villains

When the trailer for Steven Universe Future came out, everyone started speculating over who the big pink monster in the centre of this picture was. Some people seemed convinced that it was going to be a new villain. But in I Am My Monster, we finally find out who it is. The monster is Steven.

HotCoordinatedAbalone-max-1mb

This is Steven’s corrupted form. He turns into this when he realises that his way of coping with his past is very messed up. It is also no accident that this happens right after he tells his family about his new powers and his violent thoughts and actions. As Garnet points out, “As long as he believes he’s a monster, he’ll stay one”.

FancyUntriedKusimanse-max-1mb

This means that The Crystal Gems can’t fight Steven like they would with any other corrupted gem. Steven’s corrupted form is a personification of his mental illness. Many people may recognise this behaviour from breakdowns in real life. Steven has become so wrapped up in his trauma that he’s barely himself anymore. It’s up to his family and friends to help him get better.

Steve-Universe-Future-Goodbye

So, the “villain” of Steven Universe Future is Steven himself, because he has to accept that he has severe emotional trauma from the events of Steven Universe. The series didn’t end with Steven fighting one final big bad villain, because that’s what gave him his emotional trauma in the first place. Although people have argued that this ending isn’t as good as the one we got with Change Your Mind, I think the ending of Steven Universe Future stays very true to the message that the show has tried to give out from the first season. Love yourself and love each other. That’s how Steven managed to get through to the Diamonds in season 5, and that’s how Steven’s family and friends managed to get through to him in Steven Universe Future. It’s a simple message, but it’s strong. Love will always be more powerful than hatred, and it’s important for us to remember that. That’s why Steven Universe was such a successful show, and that’s also why so many people loved it. You can’t change the past, but you can always try to make things better.

Steven Universe: The Movie – Movie Review (SPOILERS!!!!)

THIS REVIEW HAS MAJOR SPOILERS!!!! PLEASE DO NOT READ FURTHER UNLESS YOU’VE ALREADY SEEN THE MOVIE!!!!

source

Only six months after the release of the game-changing Steven Universe episode Change Your Mind, we already have another installation to the story. Steven’s all grown up now, and he’s established peace across the galaxy.

tumblr_05c9f888cd96a54245836c6fbcd3136d_eba719c2_400

But this wouldn’t be a Steven Universe story if somebody didn’t come along and ruin everything almost immediately. I don’t think we even get 10 minutes of peacefulness before the villain of the piece comes in with her massive injector and starts playing around with the Crystal Gems to a catchy electro-swing song.

tumblr_px8vs9FaPx1xtxswqo3_500

Oh, also, in case I didn’t already mention…

maxresdefault (9)

Before you read any further, I think it’s quite difficult to review this movie without giving away some pretty major spoilers because it’s just so fast-paced. So, here’s the final spoiler warning:

giphy.gif

Alright. So, for those of us who have seen the movie already, you’ll already know that the villain of this movie is called Spinel. And when she launches her brutal attack on the Crystal Gems, she factory resets them and messes up Steven’s gem powers. Then Steven slices her with the reset scythe and brings everyone back home.

ztnv4youlxvseoddux3b

This brings up a lot of interesting questions about Pink Diamond’s rebellion. Apparently the scythe was a weapon used on the Diamonds’ side to bring rebellious gems back to their original roles. How many other things do we not know about the gem war? This means that all of the Crystal Gems have amnesia, and Steven and the remaining gems (Lapis, Peridot and Bismuth) have to bring everyone back to normal.

tumblr_px8ggah4qD1td1r9eo1_500

There is a vague silver lining to this situation though. Since Steven attacked Spinel with the scythe, she’s been reset too. We learn through Pearl’s explanatory song, system/BOOT.PearlFinal(3).Info (yes, that’s actually the name of the song), that Spinel was designed to be a best friend. Basically, the complete opposite of what we saw earlier.

pkkn1jg1lek31

On a side note, Spinel is such eye-candy in terms of animation. She’s obviously been modelled after vintage cartoons like Mickey Mouse and Looney Tunes, which gives us some great moments like this:

tenor (4)

So, the rest of the movie is basically just Steven and the other gems trying to bring everyone’s memories back. This can be a little slow at times, but it also brings us some really beautiful moments. One noteworthy scene is the part where Ruby and Sapphire fuse again, mimicking their first fusion in The Answer.

tumblr_px9lgtQmtL1we6z1vo2_500

maxresdefault (1)

We also see a Steven/Greg fusion, which I don’t think any of us were ready for. They completely tanked the name though. His name is Steg. Steg.

steg-fusion-greg-steven-1-630x300

With all of the other Crystal Gems getting their memories back, it’s only inevitable that Spinel eventually remembers everything too. She brings Steven to the garden that she shared with Pink Diamond. That place was their playground. In a heartbreaking musical number, she reveals that Pink abandoned her there for six thousand years. She found out about Steven and the Crystal Gems through a broadcast from homeworld. That was when she learned that Pink Diamond had abandoned her and is now dead.

ddfhgkr-53516750-a201-4931-aa69-3a39e5a3290d

That’s why Spinel is the villain. Pink betrayed her and broke her heart. If anything, this just gives us yet another reason to hate Pink Diamond.

tenor (1)

Spinel’s incredibly unstable for the rest of the movie thanks to her traumatic memories of being abandoned. We see her offering to help Steven, then suddenly reverting back to the furious gem that we saw at the start of the film, then to questioning why she’s even attacking him. This is actually a very accurate representation of depression and abandonment issues. Spinel doesn’t immediately accept that everything can be ok, and that’s the most realistic reaction for her to have in this situation.

82b97e539bb5fb8e8a357d5d527adbb4b311b9b6r1-320-240_hq

Also, the Crewniverse probably had to fit in the obligatory fight scene between Spinel and Steven and the whole pacifism message to fit the show’s message of acceptance and healing. I’m not mad about it though. It’s a great scene.

jqsuceilark31

The only real issue I had with the movie is the ending. The Diamonds come down to Earth at the wrong moment and find everything in ruins. They see Spinel and immediately recognise her as “Pink’s plaything”. They essentially adopt her and bring her back to Homeworld.

maxresdefault (2)

So, here’s why I don’t like this ending. By giving Spinel to the Diamonds, she’s essentially reverted back to being a plaything for Pink. The Diamonds only see Spinel as Pink’s toy, and will probably only keep her around as a memento for their lost Diamond. Although their intentions are good and it’s a sweet moment, it probably won’t be best for any of them overall, because Spinel has been so traumatised by Pink that she might not be able to carry out her best friend role properly; and the other Diamonds probably won’t understand that thanks to the Homeworld mentality of “you were made for this purpose, so you should do that and only that”.

maxresdefault

Overall, this movie was a lot better than I expected. I was afraid that it wouldn’t live up to the great writing that we’ve seen in other episodes of the show because quite a few other movies based on TV shows have a reputation of being too drawn-out and tending to miss the mark with the writing. Steven Universe: The Movie thankfully doesn’t have this issue. Setting it two years after Change Your Mind was a good move as well, because it gives all of the characters enough time to move on from the events in Homeworld.

steven-universe-movie-steven-message-across-worlds

I would definitely recommend this movie if you’re a fan of the show. Although there were a few issues with the ending, it’s still worth a watch.

Steven Universe: ‘Escapism’ (Season 5, Episode 28) – TV Review (SPOILERS)

Compared to the other episodes we’ve gotten so far in the Diamond Days Steven Bomb, this one was a bit disappointing. It starts off ok, with Stevonnie still trapped in the tower.

uzzhj

We also get to see more of Stevonnie’s powers (they can make two shields now – that’s new, right?), but it’s pretty short lived, and they unfuse within the first minute or so of the episode.

maxresdefault (3)

su-escapism_feedback-1-1024x576

Steven realizes that he can still do his Diamond spirit transfer thing, and that’s where the episode starts to go downhill.

hqdefault

Steven goes into the light, and wakes up as one of the watermelon Stevens.

episode-image-320x180

Yeah. We’re doing this again.

steven-universe-season-5-episode-28-escapism

The episode turns into a side-quest, where Steven has to tell Greg and Bismuth that the Crystal Gems need help back on Homeworld. The unfortunate part is, this goes on for the majority of the episode. A lot of time is spent focusing on the watermelon Steven tribe, and Steven’s attempts to make a raft and find his way back to Beach City.

su-escapism_recap-1024x576

He eventually makes it to his house, and draws in the sand to tell Greg and Bismuth what’s going on and that they need backup. Then the watermelon Steven falls to the ground, and real Steven wakes up in his actual body.

maxresdefault (2).jpg

Honestly, as soon as the watermelon Steven showed up on the screen, I immediately lost interest. This whole episode felt a lot like filler; but then again it did tell us that Greg, Lion, and Bismuth will probably come over to Homeworld at some point over the next few episodes. But other than that, I’d probably say that this is one that you can skip. It was nice to see Stevonnie in the Pink Diamond outfit again, and it was interesting to see Steven’s mind powers, but they make up a very small part of the episode, and are basically forgotten by the time it’s ended.

Steven Universe: ‘Together Alone’ (Season 5 Episode 27) – TV Review (SPOILERS)

This episode gave us a much better idea of how Pink Diamond was treated by the other Diamonds on Homeworld. Although we already knew that she was dismissed by Yellow and Blue through Stevonnie’s dream in ‘Jungle Moon’, as well as the stories that Pearl told Steven and Sapphire after the “Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond” revelation, actually seeing the way that Yellow and Blue treat Steven is something else entirely.

steven-universe-season-5-episode-27-together-alone

Steven is repeatedly dismissed and talked over throughout the episode, constantly reminding the gems and the audience that Blue and Yellow just see Pink/Steven as a child. Steven tries to arrange a ball so he can see White Diamond again – Blue and Yellow immediately tell their Pearls to arrange it for him, because he doesn’t know much about gem culture. By shoving him aside, Steven/Pink is treated just like a child again.

pink diamond

The Diamonds also refuse to let Steven interact with Connie and the other Crystal Gems throughout the ball, telling him that he has to stay seated on his throne. The other gems in the court are not allowed to dance with the Diamonds – they have to dance for the Diamonds. Garnet is forced to unfuse because of Homeworld’s intolerance of different-gem fusions, and Amethyst is given limb enhancers because she is smaller than other quartz soldiers, and therefore “defective”.

amethyst

When the ball actually starts, White Diamond doesn’t even show up. She sends White Pearl in her place. Steven is clearly disappointed by this, so Connie drags him onto the dancefloor and dances with him. They end up fusing and forming Stevonnie, outraging the rest of the gems. Ruby and Sapphire fuse into Garnet, Pearl and Amethyst fuse into Opal, and two random gems from the crowd fuse into… something else?

fusions

The other Diamonds are furious, and force them to unfuse. Stevonnie is thrown into a dark room (presumably Pink Diamond’s room?), and the episode ends there.

opal

On another note – this episode started off with Steven having a nightmare about the Diamonds. He constantly coughs up locks of Rose Quartz’s hair – perhaps hinting at his mother’s influence over his life? Because of her, both Steven and the Crystal Gems are now trapped on Homeworld, and are struggling to win over Blue, White and Yellow Diamond. Another strange thing happens in this nightmare – we see White Pearl with a pink colour palette. Could this confirm the theories that White Pearl used to be Pink Pearl?

nightmare

This episode gives us a lot more information about gem culture on Homeworld. Gems on Homeworld don’t focus on what they are allowed to do – they focus on what they are not allowed to do. As earlier episodes of the show have already told us, each gem on Homeworld has their own specific function. This episode showed us what happens when gems on Homeworld break that mould. Homeworld is harsh and oppressive, and could perhaps be a reflection of our society.

Steven Universe: ‘Familiar’ (Season 5, Episode 26) – TV Review (SPOILERS)

Steven Universe is finally back after a six-month long wait (feels longer, I know). This first episode back may seem rather underwhelming after the whole “Rose is Pink Diamond” reveal, but it does bring up some important questions about the rest of the series as a whole. Do the Diamonds really expect Steven to just take Pink’s place now? How long are Steven and the Crystal Gems going to be stuck on Homeworld? And what’s the deal with White Diamond? The pebbles from Pink’s room even make Steven a little Pink Diamond outfit, as if everyone expects him to just take her place like nothing ever happened.

pink diamond outfit

We did get to see more of Homeworld as well. The very structures of the Diamonds’ palace (?) seem to be alive, with gems embedded into the walls. What’s up with them? Every gem that we’ve seen in the series so far has been a walking, (mostly) talking, humanoid being. Were the gems in the walls traitors or defective? This raises many more interesting questions about the Diamonds as rulers, as well as gem culture in general.

This episode also gave us a new song – ‘Familiar’. Steven reminisces about the journey so far and Pink’s relationship with the other Diamonds. By the end of the song, he seems to have accepted his role as Pink Diamond, and is eager to make the other Diamonds change their ways. Zach Callison’s singing voice has also improved a lot since Season 1’s ‘Giant Woman’ and ‘Strong in the Real Way’, only emphasizing the themes of change and progress shown in the song.

vanity

This episode was a decent filler for the Homeworld storyline, but I’m much more interested in finding out what’s going to happen with the rest of the Diamonds. White Diamond remains elusive, having had only about a minute of screentime and years of fan theories. How is Steven going to change the way that the Diamonds treat other planets and other gems? What happens next? Hopefully the rest of the episode in this ‘Diamond Days’ Steven Bomb will give us a better idea of where Sugar is taking the last episodes of the series.
